George Batsakes, 73, was fatally injured in a car accident in Riverside after his vehicle was struck by another at a street intersection in Palm Springs. KPSP News reports that the deadly crash happened the morning of July 27, 2010 at the intersection of Crossley Road and Dinah Shore Drive when, police say, Batsakes ran a red light and hit a Verizon work truck. The driver of the truck was injured, but is expected to survive. Batsakes succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved George Batsakes for their profound loss. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

Countywide in Riverside, 220 fatalities and 8,561 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2008, according to California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Palm Springs, eight people died and 340 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.

Laws and Liability Issues

California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) states: "A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown."

It is not clear based on this report why Batsakes ran the red light. I trust officials are looking into the cause of the accident and are in the process of determining who was at fault. If Batsakes was at fault, then the driver of the truck can claim compensation for injuries, damages and losses, from the at-fault driver's estate and insurance. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, hospitalization, rehabilitation and other damages. A knowledgeable Riverside personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims about their legal rights and options.
