San Diego Hit-and-Run Car Accident Kills Woman
A woman was killed in a San Diego car accident the morning of February 19, 2010 after she was struck by a car. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the accident occurred in the Chollas View area when the woman was exiting her car and was struck by a station wagon near the intersection of 47th and Market streets. The driver of the station wagon drove away without stopping. Police describe the suspect vehicle as an older model Japanese-make station wagon with damage to the front bumper. The driver is described as a white man in his 50s with gray hair.
I offer my heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of this deceased victim. Please keep them in your prayers.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
There were 23 fatalities and 533 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in San Diego, according to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In San Diego County as a whole, 246 fatalities and 13,527 injuries were reported in 2008 as a result of all traffic accidents.
Hit-and-Run Laws
California law requires motorists to remain at the scene of the accident and obtain medical assistance for injured victims, even if it's something as simple as calling 911. I trust this hit-and-run suspect will be apprehended soon and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. California Vehicle Code section 20001 states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."
Claim for Compensation
This victim's family in this case would be well-advised to consult with a reputed San Diego personal injury lawyer who has an excellent track record holding negligent drivers accountable. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased car accident victims may file a claim for compensation to cover funeral or medical expenses, loss of earnings, loss of companionship and other related damages.
