DUI Collision in Orange County Causes Major Injuries
A DUI collision in Newport Beach resulted in injuries for five people. The Daily Pilot reports that the crash occurred near the intersection of Newport Boulevard and Hoag Drive, when 18-year-old Carol Nadine Quiroz lost control of her Acura Integra, crossed the center divider and collided head-on with a Dodge truck. Quiroz sustained major injuries. Four others were also injured, but they are expected to survive. Officials said on August 10, 2010 that Quiroz will likely face felony DUI charges in connection with this incident.
It is indeed fortunate that no one was killed in this collision. I wish these injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in my prayers.
Car Accidents
According to CHP's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, there were six fatalities and 439 injuries as a result of car accidents in Newport Beach . In Orange County, 152 people died and 13,414 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.
Laws and Liability Issues
California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a) states: "It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle." It is also against the law for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol.
In such cases, drivers who are found guilty of operating under the influence, can be held both criminally responsible and civilly liable for the accident and injuries caused to the victims. A DUI victim would be well-advised to contact an experienced Newport Beach personal injury lawyer, who will explain their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims or their families about how their auto insurance policy might apply to cases where the at-fault motorist may be uninsured or underinsured.
