A car accident in San Francisco, which officials say was caused by a suspected drunk driver, has left 9-year-old Ryan White critically injured. The San Jose Mercury News reports that the major injury hit-and-run crash occurred the night of August 4, 2011 on Mission Street.

The boy, along with a 58-year-old woman, was crossing the street when they were both hit by a white Toyota Tundra pickup truck. The driver left the scene, but was later arrested and identified as 21-year-old Andrew Vargas. Ryan is still in the hospital in critical condition. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Vargas is facing DUI and hit-and-run charges.

He continued, "The jury held the bank and the bank's management accountable for lying to the public about the riskiness of the loans it was making. The shareholders are grateful that the jury did not permit the bank to get away with the fraud."

Former Securities and Exchange Commission attorney Richard Serafini noted the case "is certainly going to be a blueprint for plaintiff attorneys to look at." Miami-based attorney Andrew Hall added, "Any publicly traded company in the financial sector is a likely target for litigation if its management is untruthful. There is a substantial exposure because of involvement in subprime mortgages and the awareness of the failure of credit rating companies to adequately perform."

Levan said that the bank had conservative underwriting policies and that the company was simply the victim of an unprecedented real estate crash.

BankAtlantic attorney Eugene Stearns said that shareholders will never see any money from the verdict. He also said that he has never seen a case with so many issues to pursue on appeal and he plans to get the appeal started immediately.
