An SUV rollover accident in Los Angeles fatally injured 27-year-old Brian Flores and seriously injured 28-year-old Robert Alaniz and Anthony Holguin, 19. According to a news report in The Signal, the fatal crash occurred the night of April 25, 2010 on the Highway 14 near Agua Dulce Canyon Road. Alaniz lost control of the SUV and crashed through the guardrail after which the SUV rolled several times down an embankment. Drugs or alcohol did not cause the incident, California Highway Patrol officials said. Flores was pronounced dead at the scene while Alaniz and Holguin were taken to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Brian Flores for their tragic and devastating loss. I also wish the injured victims the very best for a complete recovery. Please keep these victims and their families in your prayers.

Rollover Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are approximately 10,000 rollover accident fatalities in the United States, each year. That number accounts for 25 percent of all traffic accident fatalities nationwide. Rollover accidents can be devastating because of intensity with which they occur. Often, rollover crashes cause catastrophic injuries and even death.

SUV Auto Product Defects

If I were a member of the victims' families, I would want to know whether this accident was caused by the inherent instability of the Ford Expedition. Ford SUVs in general are notorious for their instability stemming from design defects. These vehicles' high center of gravity and narrow track width make them prone to rollovers even at normal highway speeds. Victims or their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced auto products liability attorney to get more information about their legal rights and options. In such cases, it would also be a good idea to preserve the vehicle intact, so it can be examined by an expert thoroughly for any auto product defects, design defects or mechanical malfunctions.

What can be done for people who cant put on a seat belt due to being overweight?

Seat belt extenders are available commercially and can be found on the Internet.

They say that hindsight is 20/20...It took this loss to make us aware that indeed there were seatbelt extenders available out there. Brian did not wear a seatbelt because it did not fit him, they were always too small and basicaly choked him accross his neck. I don't know, and we will never know if wearing the seatbelt would have saved him. Personally, I don't believe it would have, I think he would have sustained other fatal injuries due to the seatbelt, or even if he was wearing it, it wouldn't have retrained him.

Something to say?
