A pedestrian accident in Livermore the night of July 10, 2010 caused injuries to six people who were walking in a marked crosswalk. Bay City News reports that the woman who was operating the vehicle, 20-year-old Farhat Mohammed, was learning to drive. The injury collision occurred at the intersection of Wetmore and Vallecitos roads. Three of the injured victims were transported to area hospitals while three others suffered minor or non-life-threatening injuries.

I sympathize with these injured victims and their family members for this terrible accident. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recover.

Car Accidents

There were six fatalities and 346 injuries involving Livermore car accidents, according to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Also, in Alameda County, 82 people died and 6,935 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Pedestrian Laws

California Vehicle Code section 21950 states: "The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection." The same section also states that the driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk "shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of a vehicle or take any other action relating to the operating of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian."

Liability Issues

In this particular case, the driver was learning how to drive and she was being accompanied by a licensed driver as the law requires. If the driver is determined to have been at fault here, she could be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused to the pedestrians.
