A motorcyclist who was fatally injured in a Riverside car accident the afternoon of January 15, 2010, has been identified as 37-year-old Ryan Wade Woosley, 37. KMIR 6 reports that the fatal motorcycle crash occurred at the intersection of Dinah Shore Drive and Crossley Road. Woosley, who was going east on Dinah Shore was struck by a Buick, whose driver was attempting to turn left at Crossley Road. The Buick then struck a BMW. The two occupants of the Buick suffered minor injuries. No one was injured in the BMW.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Ryan Wade Woosley for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Woosley.

Motorcycle Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 19 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in Palm Springs in 2007. Countywide, 41 fatalities and 562 injuries were reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in 2007.

California Laws Pertaining to Left Turns

According to California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a): "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."

If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the driver of the Buick made a left turn in front of the motorcyclist. If that was the case, the driver could be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries. An experienced California personal injury lawyer in such cases, will be able to analyze all facets of the incident and determine whether there was negligence or wrongdoing involved.

Driving a motorcycle in California is definitely dangerous. Drivers need to be more aware of people who ride motorcycles, especially in intersections.
