A hit-and-run crash in Los Angeles left a motorcyclist with major injuries the night of May 22, 2010. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that the collision occurred at the intersection of Hacienda and Valley boulevards in the City of Industry when a driver later identified as 39-year-old Mario Dominguez, made a left turn in front of the motorcyclist. Dominguez then fled the scene of the crash, but was arrested shortly thereafter. He has also been charged with felony hit-and-run. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with broken bones and internal injuries.

I sympathize with the motorcyclist in this case. He seems to have sustained severe injuries. However, I'm relieved to note that his injuries may not be life-threatening. I wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery. He and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. A total of 247 deaths occurred in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Hit-and-run is a serious crime under California law. According to California Vehicle Code 20001 (a): "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." The law requires that drivers stop at the scene, exchange important information and render aid to the injured victim. However, in this case, Dominguez apparently drove away.

I also trust officials are looking into who was at fault for this major injury collision. In this case, they should be looking at who had the right-of-way at the intersection at the time.

Fault and Liability

It would be in the best interests of injured victims in such cases to seek the counsel of a skilled Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will advise them about their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also explain to victims how their car insurance policy applies to a hit-and-run crash or to an accident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive claim evaluation to injured victims and their families.
