A man who was killed in a South Los Angeles hit-and-run collision on June 26, 2010, has been identified as 39-year-old Tyrone Jones. CBS News reports that Jones was struck near the intersection of 92nd Street and Broadway by a Chevy Lumina. He was pronounced dead at the scene, but the driver of the Lumina did not stop. Police located the car, but the driver remains at large.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Tyrone Jones for their devastating loss. They will be in my prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics show that there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California, in 2008. A majority of these were injury car accidents. Also, 247 people were killed in 2008 due to hit-and-run crashes statewide.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." It is not clear in this case whether Jones was in a crosswalk or at an intersection or even crossing the street legally. But, the law requires motorists to stop at the scene of a traffic collision, regardless of who was at fault. The driver in this case, when apprehended, will most likely face criminal felony hit-and-run charges.

Claim for Compensation

It would be in the best interests of victims' families in such cases to seek the counsel of a reputed personal injury attorney in Los Angeles, who will advise them about their legal rights and options. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased car accident victims could file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation to cover medical or funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
