A teenager who was killed in a San Bernardino car accident after she was struck by a vehicle, has been identified as 17-year-old Deanae Weatherall. The Victorville Daily Press reports that the accident occurred on the Outer Highway 18 in Apple Valley, the evening of December 20, 2009, when the girl was walking along the roadway. The female driver who struck Deanae stopped after the crash. Deanae was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in this crash, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials. If you witnessed this fatal pedestrian accident, please call the sheriff's Apple Valley station at 760-240-7400.

I offer my heartfelt sympathies to everybody who knew and loved this young woman. This family will certainly be in my prayers.

Pedestrian Accidents

There was one death and five injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Apple Valley, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In San Bernardino County as a whole, 50 deaths and 432 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year. Also, countywide, car accidents claimed 308 lives and injured 9,920 people in 2007.

Car Accident Causes and Liability Issues

There are more questions than answers here. Why did this pedestrian accident occur? Where was Deanae walking at the time of the collision? Did distraction, recklessness or any other form of negligence on the part of the driver cause this tragic accident? Was this accident caused by a dangerous or defective roadway? The answers to these and other questions should hopefully determine the cause of this fatal car accident.

In such cases where serious injuries or fatalities are involved, it would be in the best interest of the victims' families to consult with an experienced California personal injury lawyer, who has been successful in holding negligent drivers accountable for their actions. If a dangerous roadway caused this accident, then the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could also be held liable. According to California Government Code, any claim against a governmental agency in California must be properly filed within six months of the accident or injury.
