A motorcycle accident in South Los Angeles resulted in injuries for a Los Angeles Sheriff's deputy, the Daily Breeze reports. The deputy was apparently on his way to investigate another non-injury collision when a driver making a left turn drove directly into the path of the motorcycle.

The injury collision occurred the afternoon of May 25, 2010 near the intersection of Florence Avenue and San Pedro Street. The deputy was riding his motorcycle west on Florence. The driver abandoned his vehicle and ran away from the scene. The deputy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a green 1999 Toyota SUV. An investigation is ongoing.

I'm relieved to hear that the motorcycle officer did not suffer critical injuries. I wish him the best for a quick and full recovery. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California, in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were a total of 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions in California.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." Motorists are required to remain at the scene, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. In this case, officials will also likely look into whether the driver failed to yield right-of-way to the officer.
