A car accident the morning of May 3, 2010 resulted in the death of 25-year-old Lisa Hylla of North Hills, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. The deadly collision happened on the northbound 405 Freeway near Devonshire Street. Hylla's 2007 Toyota Scion and a 1984 Toyota truck got involved in a collision on the freeway.

The truck was then hit by a Los Angeles Sheriff's Department patrol car. The impact of the collision apparently threw Hylla onto the southbound lanes and she died at the scene. A 64-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife, who were in the pickup truck sustained moderate injuries while the two male deputies got away with minor injuries. Officials say the two deputies were on the job at the time and were in a marked squad car. California Highway Patrol officials are investigating the crash.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Lisa Hylla for their devastating loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I also wish all the injured victims here, a fast and full recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, there were 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries due to car accidents in Los Angeles County. Also, 268 people died and 25,588 people were injured as a result of Los Angeles car accidents in 2008.

Accident Causes and Liability Issues

This could be a complex investigation because there are quite a few unknowns here. For example, officials do not know whether Hylla was standing outside her car or was in her car at the time the patrol car collided. They do not know which impact caused her to get ejected on to the southbound lanes of the freeway.

In such cases family members of deceased accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable.

What tips would you offer to those whose vehicles stall in the middle of the freeway or those who are involved in minor collisions on the freeway? How can they stay safe while waiting for help to arrive?
