A Los Angeles car accident injured Jose Gomez, 18, and his 16-year-old passenger, the afternoon of January 26, 2010 in Newhall, The Santa Clarita Signal reports. The major injury crash occurred after the Honda Civic that Gomez was driving went out of control and crashed into a pole. The Honda was traveling north on Sierra Highway when Gomez lost control of the car, went over a curb and crashed into the pole. Police say Gomez was traveling at the speed limit – 50 mph. Wet roadway conditions may have caused or contributed to this car accident, investigators say.

I sympathize with these teenagers and their families. Both victims apparently suffered severe trauma to their face and head. I hope that their injuries were not catastrophic and wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. These injured victims and their families will be in my prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 260 fatalities and 27,110 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County, 712 people died and 56,475 were injured as a result of traffic accidents in 2007.

What Caused the Accident?

This news report is not entirely clear on how and why this injury car accident occurred. Slick roadways may have contributed. However, there are still several unanswered questions. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction that led to this major injury collision? Was there another vehicle involved? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have caused or contributed to the accident? Also, investigators are not sure whether the two victims were buckled up because they sustained severe injuries consistent with someone who wasn't wearing a seatbelt. I would be curious to find out if their injuries were in fact, caused by seatbelt defects in the Honda.

An Experienced Injury Lawyer Can Help

A reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who has successfully handled similar car accident cases will be able to determine whether the victims have a car accident claim or a products liability claim in this case. If they do have an auto products liability claim as a result of a defective seatbelt, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product could be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries.
