A car accident in San Bernardino fatally injured a California Highway Patrol officer identified as 28-year-old Justin McGrory. CBS News reports that the car crash occurred on the 15 Freeway in Barstow the morning of June 27, 2010 when the officer had made a traffic stop. A vehicle driven by 18-year-old Rafael Garcia, veered off the roadway, entered the right shoulder where McGrory was administering a field sobriety test to another driver, and hit him. The officer was transported to a hospital where he died. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this young officer, especially his wife and three children who are grieving this devastating loss. They will be in my prayers.

Accident Causes
In this particular case, it is not clear why Garcia entered the freeway shoulder and slammed into the on-duty officer. We do not know yet if Garcia was impaired, distracted or driving recklessly at the time. Did he fall asleep at the wheel? Was his vehicle malfunctioning? These are all questions investigators will be asking as they carefully examine the evidence and sort out the facts of this tragic car accident case.
